Binaural beats are an auditory illusion: present one tone to one ear and a slightly different tone to the other, and the listener may perceive a rhythmic beat corresponding to the difference.

What they are

They are not an audible “brainwave” being inserted into the brain. They are a perceptual effect created by two separate tones.

Why headphones matter

Each ear needs to receive its own tone for a classic binaural-beat setup, which is why headphones or earbuds are normally used.

What studies suggest

A 2019 meta-analysis across 22 studies found an overall medium effect across cognition, anxiety and pain. A 2023 review focused on memory and attention also found a medium overall effect but described conflicting results in specific tasks. Newer reviews continue to describe potential benefits alongside limitations in certainty and study consistency.

Important limitations

Effects reported in a research setting do not validate every YouTube frequency title or branded wellness claim. Study populations, exposure times, comparison groups and outcomes vary.

Using binaural beats for meditation

Some people use audio as a cue that makes sitting practice easier. Others prefer silence or guided instruction. If you want a structured commercial implementation, see Holosync vs standalone binaural beats.
